Apprenticeships

Apprenticeships are different from traditional academic pathways, rather than attending University or College, Conveyancing Academy students are able to develop their skills and gain a professional qualification alongside their day to day profession.

The apprenticeship will provide the knowledge, skills and understanding required to become a fully proficient and qualified Licensed Conveyancer.

Our apprenticeships work alongside full-time employment in a legal practice, combined with a structured programme of training and assessment that will develop and assess the students understanding of the Conveyancing process.

Student knowledge will be tested by way of both formal and open book exams and assignments that take place both during and at the end of the apprenticeship. “Conveyancing competencies” - how well the student can apply the knowledge and skills learnt in a Conveyancing environment - will be tested and displayed through a portfolio of evidence that each student will work towards throughout their apprenticeship.

Students will learn every day, on the job, with assistance from the employer. The core area of academic legal knowledge is available through our online courses, with each student supported through the courses by a dedicated Conveyancing Academy tutor. We work with the student and the employer to ensure that the students are able to demonstrate a level of practical and academic competence to successfully complete the apprenticeship “end-point assessment”.

Throughout the apprenticeship, students will be assessed on their knowledge of conveyancing law and practice as well essential skills and behaviours through key areas of practical Conveyancing competence. Most students require an average of 12 – 18 months to complete the apprenticeship.

Following completion of the Level 4 and Level 6 Apprenticeships, students can apply to the CLC to become a Licensed Conveyancer.

How we work with you

Each student is allocated a Conveyancing Academy Tutor to guide and tutor them through the apprenticeship. Employer legal practices are asked to appoint a training Principal to oversee the training of the student apprentice. Our Tutors will work with both the student and the training Principal to ensure the academic training and framework of Conveyancing competencies are achieved throughout the apprenticeship. Video conference one to ones are available with the tutor every 6-8 weeks. Tutors are also available by telephone and email.

Online video tutorials and seminars, delivered by Conveyancing Academy experts, form a key element of the apprenticeship training programme and assist in the understanding of practical conveyancing requirements. Video tutorials cover conveyancing topics such as: checking the legal title to a property; interpreting search results and mortgage offers; client care skills and how to manage client expectations.

Students utilise our state-of-the art Academy online learning platform – Academy OLP – which provides access to reading resources including the detailed CLC course manuals and PDF files that are published online for each module.

Student apprentices are required to spend a day a week – 20% of their working week - studying or completing their Conveyancing competencies as a part of the Apprenticeship funding programme. This requirement need not be arduous, on either the student or the legal practice employer, and further information on how this learning requirement can be achieved is detailed later in this prospectus.

Students who have completed higher education achievements, such as Law degrees or completion of the Legal Practice Course (LPC), may be exempt from certain course modules, as they may already have met some of the course criteria.

How much does it cost?

If the annual wage bill of a legal practice is over £3 million, the cost of training will be funded by your Apprenticeship Levy. We can help you to navigate your Apprenticeship Service account to access this funding. Employers that pay the Apprenticeship Levy are able to pay all of the training costs from their Apprenticeship Levy account.

If your wage bill is below the £3 million threshold, the Education and Skills Funding Agency (EFSA) covers 95-100% of the training costs. The level of funding available is determined by the size of your business and the age of the apprentice. Employers that do not pay the Apprenticeship Levy, as well as large employers who have spent their Levy budget, pay just 5% of the overall cost, with the government paying the balance.

For every apprentice aged 16-18, employers receive an incentive of £1,000, paid in two equal instalments in months four and thirteen, subject to the apprentice remaining on the programme. For employers with fewer than 50 employees the 5% contribution is waived for apprentices aged 16-18. There is never any cost to the apprentice, although apprentices’ salaries may reflect the investment being made by the employer.

Size of Business Age Funding Available Max Employer Co-investment
Less than 50 employees Aged 16-18 100% £0
Less than 50 employees Aged 19+ 95% £450
More than 50 employees Aged 16+ 95% £450
